I Built a Spreadsheet to Answer One Awkward Gumroad Question: What Should I Charge?

Pricing a digital product isn't a maths problem. It's a testing problem.

This is the short version. Read the full article on Medium →

“What should I charge?” sounds like one question. It's really two: what do comparable products charge, and what would you actually keep after fees, refunds and discounts? Most pricing advice answers neither. A spreadsheet won't hand you the perfect number — but it can help you ask a far better version of the question.

The problem isn't calculating a price

Competitor pricing tells you what a market expects, not what your product is worth or what you'll take home. Those are separate questions, and blending them is how creators end up anchored to a number that quietly loses money.

Bands, not averages

Feed in three to ten comparable products and look at the 25th percentile, median and 75th — a price band, not a single average that one outlier can drag around. Then layer in fees, refunds, discounts and your income target to see take-home revenue and the order volume a goal actually requires.

Don't choose a price — design a test

A price is a hypothesis. Decide the audience, how long you'll run it, the metric that counts, what “working” looks like, and what you'll do if it doesn't. That turns pricing from a one-off guess into an experiment you can learn from.

What it deliberately doesn't do

It won't predict your sales, invent a conversion rate, or promise an “optimal” price. It doesn't scrape live data or guarantee results. The summary is a decision record, not a forecast — and that honesty is the point.
